Project Overview

GGP Consult were instructed to provide refurbishment and repair works as required to the footbridge & canopy at Bridlington Station, which were suffering from age-related deterioration. Intervention was required to maintain operational safety and ensure that the “best whole life” cost was achieved - the roof access system at Bridlington Station had also failed and was inadequate. The footbridge condition related issues included, but were not limited to, the deterioration of protective coatings, corrosion of metallic members, decay of the timber elements, failure of fixings and the deterioration of rainwater goods serving the footbridge. The deterioration of some fabric elements was so severe that they were at risk of detaching and striking the station users and trains below. Canopy condition related issues included, but were not limited to, the detachment of flashings, damage of glazing, deterioration of protective coatings, corrosion of metallic elements, decay of timber elements, failure of metallic elements, failure of fixings and the deterioration of rainwater goods serving the canopies. Roof issues did not permit safe access to the necessary areas of the roof for the purposes of maintenance. As a result, a number of condition related defects existed on the roof that required rectification. These included, but were not limited to, slipped slates, detached flashings, loose coping stones, loose brickwork, missing pointing, vegetation growth and blocked and deteriorated rainwater goods. All these issues were all impacting on the safe maintenance and operation of the station roof and needed to be addressed.
