Project Overview

A new Network Rail MDU development on land purchased from DB Cargo in Cricklewood. The project requirements included a new modular two-storey accommodation block, a steel portal frame stores building, and all external civils works including power, drainage, car parking areas and roads.

The Challenge

Following the Brent-Cross station re-development works sited on the area currently used by Train Operators to the North end of Cricklewood Depot, a new MDU with accommodation building and stores was required by Network Rail to relocate from the existing site. Land was purchased by Network Rail from DB Cargo on the existing Cricklewood sidings to build the new Cricklewood MDU adjacent to a live railway line.

The Solution

GGP Consult were appointed as Lead Designer to undertake the GRIP 5 (Government for Railway Investment Projects) detailed design for the project, by Colt Construction on behalf of Network Rail. Our multi-disciplinary team provided the following design services: Architectural, Civil, Structural, and Mechanical and Electrical (through our specialist sub- contractor supply chain). GGP Consult also undertook a number of key surveys, including topographic survey, Ground Penetrating Radar Survey (GPRS), Ground Investigation and desktop study of historical British Geological Society and Coal authority data. GGP Consult collaborated closely with our client, Colt Construction, and others across the supply chain, from start to substantial completion in 2022. The design was completed in March 2021.

The Result

The final development was successfully delivered to meet the client’s scope including a new two-storey accommodation building of modular construction suitable for housing 40 depot staff and 10 office with facilities for messing, changing, lockers, showers, toilets, drying room, LOWS / charging room, gym, meeting rooms, general office space, records and archives room and parking.

A single storey stores building was also built to store plant, tools, MSP, and a combined office. This was of a steel frame construction with a mono-pitch roof, clad in insulated steel composite panels and incorporating insulated roller doors. Externally, depot staff parking is allocated towards the north of the site adjacent to the new two-storey accommodation block and external yard area created adjacent to the new stores building. All new drainage, (surface and foul) lighting and power systems were constructed throughout the new development in accordance with GGP Consult and sub-consultant designs.
