Project Overview

This project is primarily a condition-led renewal completing a further phase of the work in the South Wales area following on from the PTW phase 1 project. The project will:

• Re-signal between Swansea workstation fringe, Neath and Brecon signal box, Pantyffynnon signal box, and Whitland signal box. The project area will be re-signalled using WTS technology to the east of Pembrey Signal Box and LoCoDR technology to the west.

• Move signalling control to a new control centre facility, Port Talbot PSB, from Port Talbot Panel B&C Panels, Pembrey Signal Box, Kidwelly Signal Box, Ferryside Signal Box and Carmarthen Junction Signal Box and recover the signal boxes where required.

The Challenge

Multidiscipline design integration to achieve successful commissioning in line with the programme. Due to the geographical location, some of the signalling assets required consideration for corrosion becuase of the marine environment. In addition, some of the proposed locations at which the signals were sited provided a challenge due to the ground conditions and rock faces.

02

The Solution

GGP became involved in the project at the early stages of GRIP 4 to provide design packages, topographical surveys and Ground Investigation to deliver the project from outline design to detailed design. Prior to the commencement of GRIP 4 GGP provided a GAP Analysis for Topographical and Ground Investigation Information.

The project required GGP to undertake the detailed design for various asset types. These are listed below:

• PSPs

• REBs

• LOCs (Level Ground & Minor Retained)

• LOCs Staging (Pad & Piled)

• Kingpost Retaining Wall for LOCs/OCs

• Object Controllers (OCs) including FIST Box

• DNOs

• PHCCs

• Signage

• 2 Track Cantilever including grillage design

• Straight Post Signals (Pad & Pile)

• SPTs & Walkways

• Mobile Generator Foundation

• Feeder Pillars

• BOPs

• LODs

• Lighting Columns

• URXs

• Ground Position Light Signal (GPLS)

• ASPs

• Temporary Works

The deliverables at each stage were issued which included drawings, models, F001/F002/F003, design logs and DRAs.

The Result

GGP were able to complete the design work and allow for the construction works to commence and for installation to be complete to achieve commissioning. Due to the project scale, GGP had to work closely with other delivery parties and manage the interfacing deliverables. Specifically, the site works required close relationship and planning between GGP and Siemens which enabled the planned surveys to be completed in a timely manner and to a high standard.

Further to this, the design teams who were involved throughout the GRIP 4-8 provided the in-depth knowledge to produce compliant designs.

The Project Manager also ensured detailed trackers of each design deliverable was provided, highlighting any potential programme risk to the client which ensured any issues were dealt with in a timely manner and did not impact the programme.
