Northumberland Line Resignalling Scheme

Upgrade and Renewal of 14No. Level Crossings

Client

Siemens

Value

Project Overview

As part of Northumberland County Council’s plans to stimulate economic regeneration and community engagement in the surrounding area, the Ashington, Blyth & Tyne route is to be converted from its current use (as a freight only line) to a passenger and freight line.

01

The Challenge

Due to the increased number of passenger trains and reconfiguration of the signalling control in the area, the relevant level crossings were to be either upgraded, or renewed, to maintain user safety whilst ensuring compatibility with the signalling controls.

02

The Solution

GGP became involved in the project to close out the AiP system by capturing the latest signalling design on the level crossing ground plans and associated deliverables, and were appointed to undertake the design through the Detailed Design process.

The project required GGP to undertake the detailed design for a number of different level crossing types. These are listed below:

  • Manually Controlled Barrier
  • Manually Controlled Barrier with CCTV
  • Manually Controlled Barrier with OD (Mark 2)
  • Automatic Half Barrier
  • Footpath Crossing with MSL
  • Footpath Crossing with OMSL
  • Footpath Crossing

The deliverables at each stage were issued which included ground plans, OD and CCTV planning drawings, design logs and DRAs.

03

The Result

GGP were able to complete the design work and allow for the construction works to commence. Due to the project scale, GGP had to work closely with other delivery parties and manage the interfacing deliverables.

Further to this, the team had to have in-depth knowledge of the level crossing standards & requirements, in order to produce compliant designs. This includes the emerging technology in the MCB-OD Mk2 requirements. Due to the complexities of level crossing design and the number of interfaces captured within a ground-plan extents, the design team require an appreciation and understanding of the various disciplines, to make sure the layout satisfies the requirements of all design teams.
